Ruling against Promusicae in Spain: P2P technologies "totally neutral"

A Spanish court has ruled that the developer of a P2P software application is not liable for infringement of copyright, on the grounds that a tool which enables a user to share files is "totally neutral" as to the nature of the files shared.

There's no official ruling available, but you can find a (Spanish) summary here.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Promusicae has said that it will be appealing the decision. Clearly, a technology mechanism for transferrings bits of data in a way which could harm a particular industry's current business model should be prevented :)
